BWPA Overall Winner - The Tourist
by Lee Acaster
'The Tourist' by Lee Acaster (London, England)

The winning picture ‘The Tourist’, is by Lee Acaster, for his image of a Greylag Goose in London. "It was a real privilege to have such a close encounter with a wild bird in the very heart of London. I vividly remember the excitement I felt as she patiently waited for me to get the shot, and I knew immediately this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I’m just grateful that she didn't lose interest as quickly as my children do when I’m taking photographs of them”. Lee Acaster.

Judge Mark Ward, Editor-in-Chief, at RSPB Nature’s Home Magazine commented “The winning photograph shows a familiar bird in a familiar setting, but the visual impact is extraordinary. The stormy, brooding backdrop sets a dramatic scene, while the orange and pink from the bird bring vibrancy to the monochromatic cityscape. Lee’s stunning photograph proves you do not have to travel far from home to capture the very best of Britain’s wildlife images.”

KILLER WHALES - FINS OF CHANGE (53 min) Ben Wallis - Austria 2014
This film reveals the current change in the Arctic: the northern polar region is the fastest warming area on our planet. This has dramatic consequences: on one hand, the polar bear looses vital habitat - because this previous top predator is used to hunt for seals on the ice. On the other hand, the Arctic ocean is increasingly opening up in summer, thus getting more and more accessible for orcas. Therefore, the so-called "killer whales" are taking over the role as the new top predators of the Arctic - while the polar bears are struggling to survive.
SNOWS OF THE NILE (20 min) Nate Dappen, Neil Losin - USA 2013
UNNATURAL SELECTION (53 min) Steve Nicholls, Sarah Whalley - Austria 2013
The wings of cliff swallows in Nebraska are getting shorter while turtles in Chesapeake Bay are getting larger. On the Galapagos Islands, different species are collapsing back into one. What has happened to evolution? The answer is very simple: us. Humans have transformed the planet beyond recognition- turning grasslands and forests into fields and cities and polluting air and water. And all of these changes have altered the course of evolution, often in surprising ways.
THE GHOSTS IN OUR MACHINE (93 min) Liz Marshall - Canada 2013
FUTURE BEHIND YOU (25 min) Frank Dorren - Netherlands 2013

Congratulations to members Brian Leith Productions for Killer Whales - Fins of Change and to Sarah Whalley for Unnatural Selection. Both are co-productions with Terra Mater Factual Studios! Read Behind the Scenes: Unnatural Selection by Sarah Whalley.

'When Wildlife Documentaries Jump The Shark' with member Chris Palmer

This summer's Shark Week on the Discovery Channel was the highest-rated in the special's 27-year history. But that success has also brought complaints. The network has been criticized for pushing entertainment at the cost of science, with "documentaries" that advance dubious theories — or are entirely fake. Discovery Channel has aired specials about everything from mythical monster sharks in Louisiana's rivers to long-extinct Megalodons supposedly still swimming the seas. Animal Planet — which is owned by Discovery Communications — has even run fake documentaries on mermaids.

A Caveat Buried In The Credits
The line between authentic documentaries and so-called "docufiction" can be blurry. Even some legitimate filmmakers have committed video fakery for the sake of a project. Chris Palmer is among them: He's a seasoned wildlife documentarian who now teaches the craft at American University in Washington, D.C. He tells NPR's Arun Rath that it's surprisingly easy to slip into misleading portrayals. One of his own misdeeds occurred during the filming of the IMAX documentary Wolves. "While the audience thought they were watching wild, free-roaming wolves, in fact we rented them," Palmer says. "We rented them from a game farm. It was on the end credits, but who — except for the director's mother — ever reads the end credits? So it was kind of surreptitious and clandestine." He says they decided to rent wolves because they wanted to show the animals' complex social life. That's harder to do with wild wolves, which are skittish and might run away when they hear a camera. "If you don't use a captive pack, then you have to habituate wild wolves, which is not a good thing," he says. "I think the mistake we made was not to be honest. It wasn't so much that using the captive pack, as not telling the audience we were using the captive pack."

Shark Week's dark side: After fake documentary controversy, Discovery doubles down on its lies

Last year, Discovery Channel kicked off Shark Week with a two-hour documentary called "Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives," about the rediscovery of a giant prehistoric predator thought to have been extinct for more than 35 million years. But it was entirely bogus. The scientists in the documentary were all actors, and the photos that supposedly showed megalodon were clearly doctored. Confirming the lie was a too-fast-to-read disclaimer that ran across the screen in the program's final seconds. The deception caused an immediate firestorm among Shark Week fans, who protested the fake documentary on social media, with many vowing never to trust Discovery again. But the program drew 4.8 million viewers – the biggest in Shark Week 27-year history – and executive producer Michael Sorensen stood by the fake documentary with a half-baked defense: "With a whole week of Shark Week programming ahead of us, we wanted to explore the possibilities of Megalodon. It's one of the most debated shark discussions of all time, can Megalodon exist today?" It's a preposterous question, according to Chris Palmer, a nature filmmaker, author of the book "Shooting in the Wild" and a professor at American University. "I was outraged that Discovery would show a film like that and deliberately, for the sake of ratings, mislead people," Palmer says. "People felt that Discovery had let them down. I'm sure they had Champagne and celebrated the ratings, but it shouldn't be that way. They did real damage with that film. They misled people and promoted pseudo-science." And now Discovery is doubling down on the lie. As part of this year's Shark Week programming, it's airing an extended version of last year's megalodon documentary, followed by a new one-hour program, "Megalodon: The New Evidence." Discovery didn't make the show available for advanced screening, but offers this program description: "Collin Drake returns to share new details of his case and present shocking new evidence of the existence of megalodon, an enormous prehistoric shark that could still be roaming the oceans." Palmer is stunned that Discovery learned nothing from the controversy. "What new evidence?" Palmer wants to know. "I'm shocked that they're airing more of this junk."

Read more: www.oregonlive.com

Chris Palmer has a new book coming out next year called Confessions of a Wildlife Filmmaker, which will look skeptically at what broadcasters like Discovery are airing in their zealous pursuit of ratings.

The campaign may be winning says Richard Brock - The "Blackfish" Effect!

It appears that due to the sucess of media and film, the tide is turning in the war against animal cruelty, over-exploitation and misrepresentation. China takes shark fin soup off the menu, Shark fin imports to world’s biggest market drop by third and SeaWorld shares sink amid concerns over killer whale displays. Are these sucesses down to film and other media? Is Blackfish really a film that has made a difference? Proof that a big corporation can be hit?

Sarah Weldon is looking for some help with her Oceans Project!

I have a couple of opportunities coming up, that might be of interest to your members. Not paid, unfortunately, but there is interest for a TV documentary and for footage to be shared through the UK tabloids as part of a channel, so could be a good stepping stone, plus have a few BBC wildlife filming type folks supporting in other ways.

First Opportunity
My boat is going to be on display at the inaugural Technopop event at the Olympic Stadium in London between the 8th October and 2nd November, with 100,000 UK students attending, aged 6-19. Could be an opportunity to give a talk about wildlife film making or to run workshops for kids to promote what you do and careers available. Week one will host some of NASA's astronauts, and each week has a different theme. I'll be sending you an invite to the boat naming and unveiling event too, which will take place on the 7th October at 4pm.

Second Opportunity
I need to start collecting photos and video footage of all the training and preparation going into the expedition and educational outreach. Keen to find some photographers or film makers who might be able to come along and capture footage that I can share online. Could be good experience for folks building up profiles, or looking for subject matter??

Next week is the first of my busy weeks and includes:
Mon: - homeopath visit in Maidenhead, 3pm - Radio interview, Marlow FM 7-9pm
Tue: - fitness assessment with Prof Greg Whyte OBE, Harley Street, London 11am (you might have seen him on TV with Davina McCall, David Walliams, Eddie Izzard, Sports Relief)
Weds - day of physiology testing and psychological assessment at Roehampaton University, London
Thurs - visit to the coastal town of Burnham On Crouch to see the boat build
Fri - public speaking coaching session with Alex Watson, South Bank Centre, London (she worked with Leona Lewis and on the X Factor)
Sat - evening: stand up comedy about the expedition at the British Science Festival, Birmingham (Prof Alice Roberts will be around)

I also need to come up with a montage to be shown at the Explorer's Club in New York in Oct.

Are wildlife documentaries contributing to environmental ignorance? asks ABC Radio National's Sarah L'Estrange

Wildlife films offer magnificent windows into nature, but is their romanticised view of wilderness hiding the darker side of habitat destruction and threatened species? Sarah L’Estrange asks whether David Attenborough and his ilk are keeping our eyes are wide shut.

Wildlife documentaries have been companions in our living rooms since the 1960s. They offer insights into the wonders of the natural world. However, is the world these documentaries portray a fiction? Currently, a quarter of all mammals are in danger of extinction. The number of other endangered species is too long to list. Yet you can watch a wildlife film and remain blissfully unaware of the imminent threat to lions, tigers, frogs or any other species. Conservationist and primatologist Dr Jane Goodall argues we have our ‘eyes tightly closed.’

Chris Watson Sound App to be released on the 10th of September – The Nimbus

The Nimbus is a sonic paintbox, featuring a collection of sound works by Chris Watson contained in an app for mobile devices. It allows you to travel within immersive sounds to impossible locations and inhabit natural environments which your physical presence would disrupt; detailed sound objects of stark beauty for personal listening. Alongside these portable experiences are a set of sound games; playful as well as sonically rich, that will take you on journeys that reorganise your everyday. The Nimbus allows you to hear natural environments as they are when we are not physically present with our smells, our noises and our narratives. Use it as a travelling companion, as you commute, work, shop or move through the grid of streets subdividing your world in arbitrarily geometric sections that have little to do with the geological and ecological reality underpinning our existence. It invites you to reframe your day-to-day activities within a strangely beautiful set of sound paintings by the world's foremost sound recordist..

Nimbus will be available for free download from The Nimbus Group website from 10 September 2014.

Preview The Nimbus Follow: @ChrisRWatson

Listen to Gossip From The Garden Pond - Three tales written and introduced by Lynne Truss, with sound recordings by Chris Watson. The first episode, called The Tadpole and the Dragonfly, airs at 19:15, Sunday 7th Sept '14 on BBC Radio 4!

"Hyperlapse For iPhone Will Revolutionize Wildlife Films" according to JV Chamary

As a biologist, my first thought after hearing about Hyperlapse – Instagram’s new app for making time-lapse movies – was this: nature videos. Hyperlapse records a film and shows frames at intervals so it looks like time has elapsed quickly. The app is simple to use. Tap a button to start and stop recording, swipe a slider to set the playback speed (up to x12 normal) then tap to save the clip to your phone and/or share it on Facebook or Instagram. The promotional trailer focuses on how the app can be used to document our daily lives. But who wants to watch boring, self-obsessed Homo sapiens? At 30 seconds into the trailer, you see seagulls on a beach, hinting at a far more interesting use for Hyperlapse – capturing wildlife.

We shed a tear for Crusoe, the lonely baboon, then blithely destroy a species by Camilla Cavendish

If you want a break from the grim world news, spare a thought for Robinson Crusoe, the lonely baboon who is stranded on an island in the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. It is a deeply human, faintly hilarious story. The intrepid baboon seems to have gone to explore the island during an unusually dry spell. When the water rose, in a river infested with crocodiles, he couldn’t swim back. For three years he has eked out a pitiful living on birds’ eggs and grass, with not even a tree to climb, calling out to his family on the far bank to relieve his loneliness. The response to his plight gives an uplifting glimpse into the human psyche. Concerned tourists have pleaded with the Mana Pools national park to mount a rescue mission for Robinson. Someone tried mooring a boat full of enticing bananas on the island, but he was too scared to approach it. Thoughtful park rangers have earnestly debated whether it would be wrong for them to interfere with the course of nature.

Wildlife Wish List – The importance of the right kit!

Wildlife filmmakers Chadden Hunter and Susan Gibson are currently shooting the new mega series One Planet. Looking for the best gear to make it with is just one element but maybe one of the most important.

"One of the challenges that wildlife has is that its very hard to find brand new stories. Whereas even fifteen years ago you could just blow people away as they’d never seen for instance this part of Peru or the Antarctic ice cap or deep sea oceans. Obviously now I think audiences are so savvy and worldly and with the advent of things like YouTube it’s really hard for us to blow people away with animals they haven’t seen before somewhere.” Chadden Hunter is a producer/director of the BBC’s One Planet which is shooting now all over the world. The public’s expectations of the new series is weighing heavy as he tries to conjure up new visual treats. “We debate about whether we should go back to more familiar animals and shoot them in a much more cinematic style, or to find those stories that haven’t been done and still shoot them traditionally on the end of a long lens. I think it is striking a balance. “What I don’t want to be doing is filming Penguins and Meerkats for the rest of my career just because I can walk through them with a Steadicam.”
